I never thought I would write this post. Because, and I should know, if there is something the French are usually NOT good at, it’s TV fiction. But sometimes there is an epiphany and BAM, two brilliant, unexpected French TV shows invade your screens !

Spotless

In London Jean Bastières leads a quiet family life with his wife and two children while running a crime scene cleaning business. But his life is turned upside down when his outlaw brother, Martin , whom he hasn’t seen in 15 years, unexpectedly reappears. And his sole posession is a freezer containing a dead prostitute whose body is full of drugs….  And the fun begins!

Spotless has been dubbed the “new Breaking Bad” and the comparison is not overrated. I also see some similarities with Dexter.  Yes, it’s an amazing  show for many reasons:

• It’s a Franco-british coproduction. (You know how the British make the best TV material in the world, right?!)
• Brendan Coyle is starring in it as a drug lord. (Yes that’s Downton Abbey’s Mr Bates).  And he claims this is the best role of his career…
• It’s a low-key, sexy show with dark humor and great dynamics.

The Returned (“Les Revenants”)

Dig into this mesmerizing supernatural drama TV series!

In a small French mountain town, many dead people reappear, apparently alive and normal. While they try to resume their lives as if nothing had happened, strange phenomena occur: power outages, the water level of the reservoir mysteriously lowers and strange marks appear on the bodies of the living and the dead….

The Returned is such a good show (it won an Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2013!) that the US  had to make a remake of it (that was cancelled after one season on A&E) , but trust me, the French original is far superior.

The second season only just premiered in France (and will air on Oct, 31st on Sundance TV), 3 years after the first season was first released. Because sometimes, it takes time to achieve great things!
